Golden award - Birds of the eastern andean slope of Ecuador - Golden-winged Tody-Flycatcher
This bird was one of those I was most keen to see during my trip to Ecuador in October 2025. Its bright colors and golden wings attracted me, of course, but that's not all. There was also its apparent difference and uniqueness among the tyrannidae family to which it belongs, as well as its rarity and limited distribution, mainly in Ecuador at the base of the Andes on the eastern slope up to 1,400 m. All this explains the title of the publication (best species X golden wings).
I took the photo at an altitude of 1,300 m in the excellent Narupayacu reserve. Before photographing it, I watched the little nesting family bustling around the hide, when I realized what a tiny and hyperactive bird it is, meaning it will be difficult to capture on camera. So it's not the best photo, but I'm fine with it nonetheless, especially considering the low light conditions at the time of my observation.
Golden-winged Tody-Flycatcher (Poecilotriccus calopterus, french : Todirostre à ailes d'or), taken at Narupayacu Hummingbird Garden, Napo Province Ecuador.
