4400 meters high - Plumbeous Sierra-finch - Ecuador 2025
We can consider this species as an other grey bird without any special characters certainly, but one can also consider that this species has been observed up to 5,600 meters in altitude ! The photo itself was taken 4,400 meters above sea level, near the Chimborazo volcano, the highest peak in the Ecuadorian Andes.
This mountain is sometimes also considered the highest in the world when measured from the center of the Earth, due to its position along the equatorial line. So it is a bird perched on one of the rooftops of the world, well above the clouds, which form the background in the image. At this height the ground is mostly barren, but plants, adapted to cold climate and windy condition in growing horizontaly, still persist.
Along with him about 40 species can be observed in the Chimborazo area, which is quite staggering from an European point of view, a continent where life disappears above 3000 m.
Plumbeous Sierra-finch (Geospizopsis unicolor, french : Haplospize gris-de-plomb), taken at 4400 m near El Arenal pass, Chimborazo Province Ecuador.
