Safeway #2776 Market Park San Jose, CA
This past week, I took a trip up to the Bay Area, and while I was there, I was able to get a good look at some stores while I was up there. In order to not spam a boatload of photos, I'll most likely post these stores over time, but I will share a few today.
This Safeway was a treat to see on a fine Thursday morning, as it is the first recent new-build store built by Albertsons that I got to see in person, as Southern California unfortunately does not have many new-builds under Albertsons that I can check out, however I guess that will change whenever the replacement store for Vons #1672 in Camarillo, and the new Vons in Santa Monica, which both are under construction, are finished. For now, this will do.
This 65k square foot Safeway supermarket, as well as a Safeway Express gas station and convenience store, opened in 2021 as part of a larger transit oriented development called Market Park. It was constructed by a station on the newly extended BART line. It is one of several new Safeway supermarkets opened by Albertsons since the two companies were merged in 2015.
Albertsons has heavily invested into the Bay Area, as well as NorCal in general, since it merged with Safeway, which is a major turn of events. Its pervious NorCal division with its own namesake stores ultimately failed in 2006.
I mentioned this in a previous post, but while Albertsons has had a NorCal presence off and on for a few decades, they really did not have any sort of presence in the Bay Area until their merger with Lucky in 1999. Like SoCal, NorCal shoppers were not so happy when their favorite supermarket all of a sudden became an Albertsons... with Albertsons prices. When the company split in 2006, the entirety of Albertsons in NorCal, from Paso Robles/Bakersfield up to the Oregon border, was either sold off or closed.
Today, the Lucky name lives on with its revival by Save Mart, even though they have way less stores now than they started with, and Albertsons once again has a NorCal presence with Safeway, this time a much stronger one.
Thank you for reading this long post about the whole Albertsons NorCal division that I fit into one post of a Safeway.
