Amazon Fresh and The Market Place Irvine/Tustin, CA
Checked out the Irvine Amazon Fresh, as well as walked around the bottom half of The Market Place shopping center on 12/1/23.
The Market Place is a very large power center with multiple supermarkets, big box stores, restaurants, and an Edwards Cinemas. The center first opened in 1988 and has seen multiple expansions since. The center is on the border of the Tustin and Irvine city limits, with two ends of the center in different cities. The Irvine side is the side I walked around. Currently, some of the big box stores on this side were recently demolished to make way for new apartments/condos.
The Amazon Fresh at The Market Place opened in 2020 as it's second store, replacing a former Babies R Us. It recently finished a remodel, in order to freshen the store up since the current interiors of Fresh stores weren't very appealing to customers. The store also has an in-store Krispy Kreme, which I would guess to be in response to Albertsons, Vons, Ralphs,Target, etc. having their in-store Starbucks. I definitely appreciate Amazon trying to find another appealing food vendor instead of just copying competition with an in-store Starbucks.
This store no longer uses camera technology to track customers items, but instead uses sensors on their shopping carts. This saves customers from having to scan into the store.
