A situation - Quantum Fold Chapter 10/8

Kayla and K’hall landed in the nest chamber spilling over a cart. The noise echoed down the chamber.

K’hall struggled to overcome the disorientation from the jump. “That is an awful feeling. I feel like my insides are scrambled.”

“It would have been worse if we had landed inside this rock wall,” whispered Kayla.

Several reptilians could be seen in the distance checking eggs, but they didn’t seem to be concerned about the racket caused by the overturned cart.

You were not exaggerating the size of their operation. K’hall then spotted an empty eggshell… the creature was hatched, gone. Motioning to Kayla. “We may be too late to destroy them all.”

“I want to place the compressor further down in the center of this large area.” Said K’hall. They each grabbed a handle on the plasma compressor and started dragging the heavy unit down the aisle between the egg tables.

The heat lamps lit the room in a red glow. The temperature was staggering. They had to stop to rest. It was then a siren sounded, and they spotted a large number of reptilians emerging from doors along walls. They were far away but their movement indicated urgency.

“That does not look good.” Said Kayla. “We should hurry.” They grabbed the compressor and hurried on.

Adrienne and Avhal had their compressor in position. They tried to see the others, but they were too far away. They waited for K’hall’s signal.

When the siren sounded dozens of reptilians emerged. They zig-zagged between the egg tables in a urgent way. “They are headed directly for us” whispered Adrienne. “They may have detected when we jumped in here.”

Avhal replied,” Or their sensors may have picked up radiation from the containment field inside the compressor, they may not be able to see us but that might give us away.”

K’hall’s vitec chirped. Avhal’s voice crackled, “We have a situation developing. There are a large number of lizards working their way directly toward us. I believe they have detected the generator.”

“Have them hold position,” said Kayla “They may be able to sense us, but they can’t see or touch us or the units. Let’s move.” She felt Adrienne’s thoughts---terror as if it were her own—the raw panic of being hemmed in on all sides.

Dozens of reptilians soon surrounded where Adrienne and Avhal stood. All were sniffing and tasting the air, waving and jabbering in their language. One approached with an instrument that clearly was homing in on the generator.

Reptilians clogged the aisle ahead of K’hall and Kayla. Kayla whispered “keep going. We can walk right through them. It was obvious dozens of reptilians were starting to surround them.”

Finally, K’hall whispered “this place will work.” Kayla noddled. He spoke into his vitec. “Avhal are you ready?”

By now, over a hundred reptilians crowded the chamber, their scaled bodies pressing in around Arienne and Avhal as they knelt in uneasy silence. One leaned close, nostrils flaring beside Avhal’s ear, its rancid breath curling across his cheek. “More than ready,” Avhal muttered, voice steady despite the stench.

“Pull the grid now” came K’halls voice.

Avhal flipped open the lock and yanked out the safety grids. A warning siren erupted from the plasma generator, followed by the high-pitched whine of a system rapidly slipping into an uncontrolled reaction.
