Secondary target - Quantum Fold Chapter 9/4

Avhal turned from his display, his face shadowed. “K’hall,” he said, voice low and grim. “Transmission from Axiom12. Axiom5’s distress call was interrupted. All contact lost. Sensors indicate she’s broken up. Mass casualties expected. Axiom12 will reach the escape pods in ten sectors.”

Bext’s hand flew to her mouth, eyes wide with silent horror.

K’hall didn’t move. Then slowly, he turned to Avhal. “I have failed them,” he said, “The attack wasn’t stopped in time.” The words trailing off.

He stared into the void ahead, mind racing—how fast it must’ve come, how final. Had the Council escaped? Had the two humans survived? Had the last thread of the Ikhon bloodline on Earth had just been extinguished?

“Bext,” he said quietly, “time to target?”

She swallowed, voice cracking. “Fifteen sectors. All systems green. Weapons at full capacity. Portal coordinates locked. No intel on their defenses.”

“They will be ready,” K’hall muttered, jaw clenched. “Lizards always are. Be ready to target any missiles they send our way.”

He grabbed the comm. “Ramva3, 4, 19—same formation as before. Line up behind us. Stay tight. Attack run begins now.”

He plunged the orb so it was skimming the desert floor. The other three following.

Avhal’s screen flared. “Incoming. Fighter jets—fast on intercept. Vector 195 and above.”

K’hall growled. So much for surprise. “Ramva19,” he barked into the comm, “target the jets the moment they’re in range.”

Oam’ka’s voice crackled back. “Weapons locked. Ready to fire.”

Sirens screamed across the portal complex. They were already on full alert. K’hall and his attack group were well below the reptilian radar, but the fighter jets had alerted them of the approaching attack. The defense crews weren’t able to get a lock on the low flying orbs but they had every weapon aimed in the direction reported by the jets. All eyes were focused and waiting to launch the counterattack.

K’hall’s voice sliced through the comms. “Ramva3, 4, 19—prepare to break right. Then loop hard back. On my mark… 3, 2, 1—BREAK HARD!”

“3, 2, 1—BREAK LEFT! —Bext, now! FIRE!”

There wasn’t time to redirect the defenses. Energy beams tore through the air. Missiles detonated before launch. The portal, split cleanly in two, collapsed in a cascade of fire and metal.

Ramva19 downed two jets instantly. But a third struck back and scored a hit. Remva19 impacted the ground and swerved from the impact. Oam’ka’s voice crackled. “We are hit.”

Ramva3 vaporized the remaining two jets.

The remainder of the complex erupted in a sea of fire—tactical nuclear missiles intended for defense exploding on the ground. The entire site covered by a radioactive cloud.

K’hall’s voice sliced through the static. “Ramva19, report your status.”

Oam’ka’s reply came ragged, strained. “Direct hit. Hull breach—severe. Lower structure integrity unknown. Cabin pressure and life support compromised. Altitude restricted… we won’t make it to sky dock.”

K’hall banked hard, scanning the damage. “Ramva19, your lower third of your hull is torn away. The damage is too extensive. You will need to land—anywhere safe. We’ll stay close and extract your crew.”

The decision was made. But the fate of Axiom5 hung heavy in the silence.
