Stargate - Quantum Fold Chapter 6/8
The orb hovered, circling slowly at a distance.
They studied the ring through the radioactive smoke of a destroyed missile site. It appeared battered and ancient. The site where it stood was clearly still under construction.
K’hall turned to Kayla, his gaze sharp. “You are certain that ring is a dimensional portal?”
Kayla nodded slowly. “Quite sure. We jumpers didn’t use them but others in my time used identical portals to traverse vast distances. Interdimensional travel was possible… but rare. That was before the war—the one that nearly erased all life on Earth. The portals, like everything else my civilization built, were lost in the global holocaust.”
K’hall fell silent, absorbing the weight of her words. Then, quietly: “That explains the signal. It nearly mirrors the one from your device. If the lizards have access to this technology… we’re facing something far more dangerous than we thought.”
“But this tech was obliterated in your time,” he continued. “How could it reappear after so long?”
“I don’t know,” Kayla admitted. “Everything above ground was annihilated. No records. Nothing remained.”
“I think I might know,” Adrienne said. All eyes turned to her.
“Twenty years ago, the U.S. invaded Iraq, looking for weapons of mass destruction. None were found. But there’s long been speculation among conspiracy theorists that the true objective was something else entirely—a stargate, buried deep in a very ancient archaeological site.” Looks like the theory is true.
K’hall studied the ring on the screen. “We have never seen this signal before. I suspect they activated the portal for the first time today. A test run.”
Kayla leaned closer. “For portals to function you need to have at least two… one to enter, one to exit—separated by great distance, maybe worlds. In my time, there were many.” I have never seen one this massive.
K’hall’s expression darkened. “Then there must be others. In other realms.”
“There must,” Kayla agreed, her voice barely above a whisper.
K’hall turned to Bext, his tone cold and final. “We cannot allow this to remain in their hands. Destroy the ring. Wipe out everything.”
The orb’s main weapon fired. A beam of searing energy tore through the ring, reducing it to a crater of molten debris. Seconds later, the complex followed—consumed in a cascade of fire and ruin.
“We have company.” Avhal said, his fingers gliding over his consol. “Aircraft. Forty sectors out approaching fast."
