The stranger - Quantum Fold Chapter 6/1
The stranger kept his grip firm on the girls’ necks as they were ushered behind the tavern. In the vacant lot, they gasped—an orb shimmered into existence, pulsing with light. A doorway split open, and a ramp unfurled from its base. The ship loomed above them, massive and radiant in the morning sun.
Once on the foot of the ramp, the stranger finally released them, gesturing silently for the girls to ascend. He led them inside.
Kayla reached out mentally to Adrienne—Jump. But Adrienne couldn’t. Something was blocking her.
“This is… unreal,” Adrienne breathed, her eyes wide with awe. Kayla, equally stunned, took in the vast interior.
The doorway sealed with a hiss.
The man stood before them—tall and unnaturally slender, his skin alabaster, his eyes an icy blue. Hair fine and white as frost. “Please. Sit,” he said, his voice calm, yet edged with command. He lowered himself into a seat across from them.
I do not intend to harm you. I am called K’hall. My people are not native to this Earth, though we have come here and exist in a parallel dimension. We are Arcturian.”
He studied them in silence, his gaze lingering on Kayla before nodding slowly. “You come from a distant time. What are you called?”
“I’m Kayla,” she said. “And this is Adrienne.”
K’hall turned to Adrienne. “You are not of her era. Your soul is young. Many millennia separate you… yet you are kin. And you have arrived at this place together.”
He paused, his tone shifting. “The blood of Ikhon flows through you. Very ancient and from very far away. You are jumpers. I have heard of your kind. Dangerous. You are very dangerous.”
His voice darkened. “Tell me—why were you in the desert last night?”
The girls exchanged a glance, startled. “We were searching for the entrance to the reptilian underground,” Kayla said. “Was it you who destroyed it?”
“Yes,” K’hall replied slowly. “That facility was used to produce chemical weapons. The lizards have been poisoning the air and soil to weaken humanity. But the damage reaches beyond this dimension. It corrupts everything. This we cannot allow. We intercepted their delivery and shut it all down.”
“How did you find us?” Kayla asked.
K’hall’s lips curled faintly. “The devices you carry emit a crude, noisy signal. Easy to track.”
He leaned forward. “Others of your bloodline were taken recently, were they not?” His gaze locked onto Kayla. “But they didn’t survive. Do you know why they hunt you?”
“They want the jumper’s abilities,” Kayla said slowly, sensing he knew more than he let on—or was reading her thoughts.
“Yes,” K’hall said gravely. “They seek your power to breach the veil between dimensions. To conquer us, as they’ve done with humanity here. Other realms would be defenseless. They have tried… but they cannot cross.”
His eyes narrowed. “This is why I cannot allow either of you to fall into their hands.”
