A plan - Quantum Fold Chapter 5/2
Adrienne paid the waitress, then leaned in slightly. “Have you heard other stories like the one those men are discussing?”
The waitress shrugged, her tone casual but guarded. “Sure, I heard things. Guys head out into the desert, start drinking, get high, claim they seen weird shit. One guy swore he seen God come down from the sky. Doesn’t happen every day, but I heard a few. Sometimes government folks poke around. I keep my nose out of it.”
Kayla glanced at Adrienne, eyebrows raised. “It’s a strange story. Let’s stick to a hotel tonight." Nodding with a thanks to the waitress.
The two rose from their stools and headed toward the door. The men behind them continued their animated debate, oblivious.
“Thanks, ladies,” the waitress called after them. “We open at six for breakfast.”
Outside, Adrienne slung her backpack over her shoulder, the laptop inside shifting against her spine. “Let’s jump back to the shelter and review the files I have on the region south of the Four Corners.”
Kayla gave a sharp nod, and they slipped down a narrow alley. Moments later, they jumped.
Back in the shelter, Adrienne settled before the computer screen, scanning through files and the map of incidents near the mound where the two campers had been. Over the past decade, sixteen cryptid sightings and eighteen missing person reports formed a tight radius around the area.
“The creatures described in these reports don’t match,” Kayla said, studying the clustering on the map. “But that could be because they shift form. Every account’s a little different.”
Adrienne pointed to a few markers just outside the core radius. “These might be connected too. I need to power up—where’s the outlet?”
“No outlets here,” Kayla replied, bringing over a slim box with a copper sphere mounted on one end. “Lay your laptop’s power supply on this. It’ll charge.”
Adrienne raised a brow. “What is this thing?”
“The copper sphere is filled with mercury. It draws electricity from the aether. It’s everywhere—you just need a way to tap in.”
“What are the coordinates for the mound?,” she added.
Adrienne rattled them off from the map, and Kayla entered them into her VDD.
“Tomorrow,” Kayla said, her voice low with resolve, “we visit the mound.”
