Adrienne broke the silence, her voice low and deliberate. “If all the reptilian females are converging on a single site—and quickly—we should see a massive surge in travel activity toward the nest.”
Kayla answered without hesitation, calm yet intense. “They’ve had centuries to prepare. Surface movement may be irrelevant. These creatures are subterranean by nature. In my time, they had a sprawling tunnel network—global in scale. I doubt that’s vanished.”
Adrienne turned toward her. “So where’s your best guess for the nest?”
Kayla’s eyes drifted upward, her voice going distant. “Somewhere in what’s now the southwestern United States. My team couldn’t get a fix on it. The land has completely changed from my era—there were no mountains, just inland deltas, warm seas, and floodplains. The nest is probably linked to an immense underground city, older than anything built by humans.”
Adrienne exhaled sharply, irritation rising. “That’s a huge area to search.”
“We knew Earth’s topography would change,” Kayla said. “That’s why we left a marker beacon. It emits an ultra-low frequency pulse. If we’re close enough, our VDDs should detect it and trigger a precise transport.”
“And you’re sure it still works? Not compromised or destroyed?”
“I doubt it. The beacon was made to be indestructible and invisible—except to us. My guess is we’re just not close enough yet.”
The words had barely left her mouth when a deep tremor rolled through the ground, rattling the shelter. Dust and rock sifted from the ceiling. Adrienne and Kayla locked eyes— both aware their haven could turn into a grave.
