A safe place - Quantum Fold Chapter 3/ 5

Adrienne trembled, her breath ragged. She knelt next to Kayla and watched through the veil as the man in the black suit disappeared back inside. The air around her felt heavier, charged with the impossibility of what she had just witnessed.

“Okay, Kayla. I completely believe in shape-shifting lizards.”

Kayla’s expression was unreadable. “I’m sorry. I told you—but you have to see to believe. We were safe, but let’s not risk him coming back.” She reached for Adrienne’s hand. “Let’s jump.”

The world around them blinked, and suddenly, they were elsewhere.

Kayla’s smile was warm but firm. “Welcome to my shelter.”

Adrienne took a slow step forward, scanning the space. It was a cozy apartment-like setting—but something felt... off. “No windows?” she asked.

Kayla held another bottle of wine. “No windows. No doors. We’re a mile underground, surrounded by solid rock. The only way in or out is to jump. We are absolutely safe here.”

Adrienne sank into the sofa, her body still trembling, releasing a slow sigh. The quiet pop of the cork made her flinch.

Kayla poured a glass and handed it to her. “Take out your VDD and hold it in your hand.”

Adrienne set down her drink and obeyed, her fingers curling around the device.

“Now,” Kayla said, “think about activating it.”

A soft hum resonated through Adrienne’s palm, the device pulsing with light.

“Perfect.” Kayla’s gaze sharpened. “Now, focus on sitting in that chair over there... And don’t worry. If something happens, I can pull you back.”

Adrienne hesitated, then concentrated. In the blink of an eye, she was across the room setting in the chair. Her breath hitched.

“Wow,” she whispered.

Kayla nodded approvingly. “Now, think, focus, about sitting on the sofa again.”

The world blurred, then settled. Adrienne was back on the sofa.

Adrienne stared at the device, running her fingers over its warm surface. “Now, think about deactivating it.” Adrieene did. The hum and glow ceased.

Kayla took a sip of wine. “That’s your first teleportation lesson,” Kayla said with satisfaction. Put it away—and remember, it must stay on your person at all times.”

Adrienne exhaled deeply. Her muscles ached from the tension, the weight of the day pressing into her bones.

Kayla swirled her wine. “It’s been a very long day.”
