Frantic ride. Vol1/ 16

Capitan Bannon and his men rode hard and reached the seaport. They were at least three hours behind the coach that carried Lady Adrienne and the two girls kidnapped from the village.

They spread out questioning everyone and searching for the black coach. Several people had seen the coach and directed Bannon to the pier where it had stopped and unloaded a passenger and goods. Bannon shouted for everyone to follow him.

They ran to the pier. But when they arrived, they found the pier empty. There was no ship. Bannon’s blood ran cold. They were too late!

Bannon spoke with members of the crew working on the ship nearby. A ship had been there but had left two hours before. No one had seen the girls or anything unusual.

Two sailors had seen a black coach. One recounted that the coach was only here briefly, and they unloaded a “few” bundles that were carried aboard the ship that was docked there. That was a couple of hours ago, just before the ship cast off.

“Could the bundles have been a person?” questioned Bannon. “It be possible. They would have been small. It be hard to say. Could ‘ave been someone small wrapped in a blanket”.

Another sailor spoke,” I seen ‘em load three bundles. They carried them over their shoulder, and now that ye mention it, I think I saw one of them bundles move”.

“Do you know where that ship was from?” asked Bannon. “Did it have a name?” “Dunno where she hailed from, but she was a fancy two-mast schooner named “Emerald Star”, said the sailor. “They had cargo delivered this morning. Maybe someone ‘as a record of who paid for it”. H. Conrad was pained on one wagon, Ye might ask them.”

Canvassing the docks and local businesses failed to turn up the home port of the Emerald Star. All goods had been paid for in gold with no questions asked. And there was no sign of the coach. All they had was the name and description of the ship.

The searchers had reached a dead end.
