Finally, a break. Vol 1/ 12

It was mid-day, the rain had stopped and the sky was starting to clear. Bannon and his men questioned villagers living near the rail bridge where Lady Adrienne’s motor car was found.

They learned two girls, cousins, from the village had been missing for 4 days and several others had gone missing over the past year.

Few villagers had been outside the previous night. No one had seen Lady Adrienne. Bannon's questioning was not producing any further information.

They were introduced to a railroad worker who recounted how he’d been out in the storm walking down the tracks checking for washouts.

He spotted a group ahead of him, walking down the rail bed ahead of him with a lantern. The railroad man said, “when lightening flashed, I could see three men and one woman clearly. The woman appeared to have ‘er hands bound and was being pulled along by a rope. Knowin’ how girls have vanished hereabouts I said to meself, that’s a bloody strange thing.

I hailed the group and got no reply. So, I followed em’ for a about a mile. I think they spotted me behind, and they moved off the rail bed into the brush. I lost track of them in the downpour. I kin show ye where I lost sight of em”.

At last Bannon knew the direction Adrienne had gone after leaving the bridge. He was now gravely concerned for her safety.
