Grave news. Vol 1/ 4

The staff at Chatsworth House received a telephone call from Akerley Manor that Lady Adrienne had departed for home. That was over 6 hours ago. The trip usually takes 2 hours by motorcar and Lady Adrienne is long overdue. The storm had been raging almost the entire time, there was an ever-deepening concern, more so now that it was dark.

Colonel Gregory Mackenna, Earl of Carrick paced in the study waiting on news from the rider sent to find Lady Adrienne. Just then, Randal rushed in. Randal, or Captain Bannon, had been MacKenna’s adjutant and after returning from their assignment in India, continued managing affairs at Chatsworth.

Sir, the rider has returned but I’m afraid there’s distressing news. There’s no sign of your daughter but he found the number plate from her motorcar. The captain handed the plate to Mackenna.

Mackenna stood silent staring at the plate then asked, “where was this found?”

Sir, on the ground near the uphill curve in the main road…. hesitating, he added, the road there is washed out… completely gone down the hill into the river. He searched but could find nothing more.

Randal, arrange to send four more riders out to search immediately. Order them to take what is needed to search the washed-out area again. If nothing is found, split up and search the side roads until she's found.

Done, Sir. Six men volunteered and are preparing to leave in minutes. I’ll be with them.

Randal, telephone Akerley and instruct them to send out riders to search.

Sir, the telephone isn’t working. The wires must be down, the storm….

Good man, Randal. Thank you. Take care in this weather.

Randal nodded. Yes, certainly, Sir. We will find your daughter.
