ECOPhoto #Image2

In these photos, the location was in Northwest D.C. and was taken this October. These photos directly relate to the UN goal (11) of Sustainable Cities and Communities through the amount of diversity in the area. From this, there are designated areas that are purposely made for the promotion of more greenery in a community. There is a mix of bushes and trees that is a part of the land and streets. This influence of greenery can influence different types of positive effects to occur. For instance, these green communities can reduce pollution and improve mental health. Not only can these be beneficial, but there are also other benefits as well. An ecological concept that is directly related to is the mitigation of the urban heat island effect. The urban heat island effect are the areas, “that experience higher temperatures than outlying areas” (EPA). This effect then subsequently affects the increase of costs of air conditioning and higher air pollution. For instance, the Park View are specifically 4.7 ⁰C greater than the average temperature of Washington D.C. as a whole (ARCGIS). This increase can be seen in different areas in D.C. such as Washington Highlands and Fauntleroy Community Center. With the implementation of new greenery within the community, there is a chance for these plants to reduce the temperature in these specific areas and to have cooler night-time temperatures. This then should deflect some radiation that is given off from the sun and put more oxygen into the atmosphere.
