Lares Trek, Peru
Cuncani is a community of 71 families living at 3,800m (12,467 feet), in the Peruvian Andes. Camping here funds investment in social projects involving health, education, and nutrition, and infrastructure improvements to water and electricity. It's also where you sleep before the hardest day of the Lares Trek - over the Sicllaccasa Mountain pass, one vertical kilometre from here. Quechua (the indigenous Andean language) is the families' mother tongue - despite the communication barrier, local kids will still come out to greet you. And yes, I did hand over my last chocolate bar.
