WP 920-D: End of the Road at Stockton
On November 7, 1971 WP 920-D was involved in a tragic accident on the Highline at Westwood. Due to apparent tampering of the siding switch which resulted in a North train side swiping a South train which was in the siding. The resulting collision toppled the WP 920-D and trailing locomotives onto their sides while derailing the opposing trains locomotives. Two crew men lost their lives in the accident, and three others were severely injured.
WP 920-D is seen post recovery sitting on the Stockton roundhouse whiskers. The 920-D, with it's large steam era snow plow, will be trade in fodder for new GE U30Bs, and also solving the question I had to the fates of the remaining large steam era plows adapted for use on the first generation EMDs.
I would like to thank long time family friend, Frank Brehm, for helping me identify this locomotive and adding some detail to the incident. You can check out Frank's extensive encyclopedia of WP information on his website at: wplives.com/
