"Ladies and gentlemen, I'm opening the first of its kind, a hotel that rehabilitates sinners!"
What started as an indoor lighting test for my toy photography turned into an ensemble shot of a fictional character that I have recently found very compelling. Princess Charlotte "Charlie" Morningstar - the heir to the throne of Hell - is the protagonist of "Hazbin Hotel," an animated series that originally started on YouTube and is now hosted on Amazon Prime Video. Voiced by actress and singer Erika Henningsen, Charlie is the owner of the Happy Hotel, a free lodging establishment that grants residence to sinners who want to atone for their mortal transgressions. A safe-haven from the relentless chaos and destruction that plagues Hell, the hotel's long-term goal is to instruct sinners in positive morals and virtues, so that they may be eligible to ascend to Heaven. Aside from a handful of family members, friends, hotel guests, and occasional allies to her cause, Charlie is faced with scrutiny and hostility from many who reside in Hell, their underlying argument being that redemption for a soul that has already been condemned is impossible. While intermittently faced with doubts and fear, Charlie learns over time to muster her inner courage to to continue with her work. She may get knocked down, but she takes it upon herself to stand up, dust herself off, and remind herself why she continues to render aid to the suffering. Sinners her occupants may be, but Charlie is always the first to affirm that "these sinners are my family."
