What are the Causes of Hyperlactation (Excess Milk)? What Should be Done?

With the onset of childbirth, milk production mechanisms are activated, and your body becomes ready to feed your baby. Your milk also gradually begins to be secreted with the start of childbirth. In fact, in some mothers, milk can start to flow even drop by drop before childbirth! Then, as time goes on and more importantly, as you breastfeed your baby, your milk increases.

In some mothers, however, this milk secretion can be quite excessive, and this intense milk flow can affect the breastfeeding process. What are the symptoms of this intense milk flow, what kind of problems does it cause, and what methods can you apply? The answer to all these questions is in our article!

What is Hyperlactation?

Hyperlactation is the excessive milk production and the fast and forceful flow of milk due to it. This condition can affect both the baby and the mother significantly.

What are the Causes of Hyperlactation?

Hyperlactation can occur due to various reasons, sometimes due to the anatomical structure, and sometimes due to genetic, hormonal, or some practices during the breastfeeding period.

Anatomical Structure

The milk-producing glands called alveoli glands are usually present between 100,000 to 300,000 in a normal breast, while in people with hyperlactation, this number can be higher, leading to more milk production and a more forceful milk flow.

Hormonal Changes

Two important hormone mechanisms play a role in milk production, prolactin and oxytocin.
