Gujarat declares - ‘Ghol’ as State Fish

• The black-spotted croaker, or the ghol fish is commonly found in the Indo-Pacific region, ranging

from the Persian Gulf to Indonesia and north to Japan.

• The Ghol fish is highly valued, especially for its fish maw (dried

swim bladder)

• The Gujarat government chose the ghol mainly because of its

economic value and its uniqueness.

• Indirectly, this declaration will allow sustainable fishing - it is not in danger of being extinct as of

now and that is not the reason for it's declaration as state fish.

• But unsustainable fishing in the future can threaten its survival.

• Considering its economic value ..it is a possibility.
