1960s-Fire-alarm-ssytem

At the turn of the 19th century, a fire alarm system was placed in the old Station One. The control room received the box calls that was reported by the citizens.

This box stood on the corner of Chapel Hill and Duke Streets. The system stayed in use till the early 1970’s when it was replaced by telephone call boxes. At the end of fire alarm box era, there were 175 boxes covering the city.

Note the cement street markers. They to were replaced about the time the boxes were removed.
