Somalia - A nurse monitoring a newborn in the UNFPA-supported IC

A nurse assists a baby in an intensive care unit for newborns fully funded and supported by UNFPA at Banadir Hospital in Mogadishu, Somalia on November 9, 2022.

The gravest drought in 40 years is affecting Somalia and the Horn of Africa. Conflict and effects of climate change area debilitating lives of millions of people in the region.

Up to 20 million people in the Horn of Africa are facing the risk of starvation by the end of this year, according to the World Food Program. The most devastating crisis is unfolding in Somalia, where about seven million people face acute food shortages. The drought crisis, the war in Ukraine, the fight against Al-Shabab and a highly volatile security situation with political tensions have created a combination without precedents for Somalia.
