Kenya - Midwife Charity providing Baruaka, 19 with postnatal car
Midwife Charity Njiru provides postnatal services to Baruaka Yusuf Ibrahim (19) who has been a mother for the first time at Daadab Sub-County Hospital, Garissa County, Kenya on December 21, 2022.
The current drought situation in the Horn of Africa is considered the worst in the last 40 years and has had devastating consequences for women and girls. An estimated 134,000 pregnant or lactating women are in urgent need of services in Kenya’s Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASAL) in the north of the country. A depressed uptake of a range of SRH services, including New ANC visits and facility deliveries, is a noticeable trend in drought-affected counties. Women and girls are also facing heightened risks of gender-based violence (GBV), sexual exploitation and abuse.
