Angels well (engelsbrunnen), Wertheim

Located on Market Square is an interesting piece of craftsmanship that was created in 1574 by master builder Michael Matzer and sculptor Matthes Vogel. It was originally an urban draw well that supplied water to the town. It is made entirely of red sandstone and is decorated with several sculptures that represent personalities of the time (mayor, town administrators, artists, etc.), each assigned to one of the planets known at the time (the ones visible to the naked eye: Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn) with their respective zodiac symbols. There are also two angels at the top carrying a shield imprinted with the town's coat of arms (hence the name Angel Well). Also, there are some interesting pieces of hardware hanging over the well opening. These are pulleys and hooks made of iron and wood; they look nearly old enough to be originals!
