The fortress exists surely since before 1463, but in that year, the Ottomans mention it for the first time. They fortified it and built a small town inside of it, and later, the houses and streets started to appear around it, forming the 'Donja carsija' (downtown) of the town of Travnik. Years later, 'Gornja carsija' (uptown) was added to the town, which for some 150 years was the capital of Bosnia (Sarajevo being the capital before and afterwards, and Bobovac being probably the first capital of Bosnia, in the period before the Ottoman rule over the country).
