Complete Sports v07n12 (1952-07.Stadium) cover Norman Saunders (Darwin Edit)

Norman Saunders, 1952.

I can't figure out what's happening behind the determined looking pitcher, but this is Crosley Field, where the Cincinnati Reds played until 1970. Saunders has a number of excellent baseball-themed covers he did for Martin Goodman in a run of Complete Sports around this issue.

I picked this one up to scan during the playoffs this year, and it was a most exciting game tonight between two great teams, the evil empire west (LA) and evil empire east (NY). I'll put aside their deep pockets and history of success and simply enjoy the baseball and be happy my small market faves made it as far as they did (Go Royals!).

An good sports pulp, Goodman's Complete Sports emphasized variety and would often put dioramas of various sports on the cover or boast stories from a number of different sports. This issue has baseball, football, boxing, tennis, horse racing, and golf stories. In the basement as far as collectors are concerned, I contrarily find sports pulp great fun to read.

It'll go up at the Internet Archive as well, as soon as they are done battling hackers that apparently don't like books.
