Smart Love Stories v07n06 (1938-05.Street & Smith) cover Alex Redmond (Darwin Edit)

Alexander Redmond, 1930.

Smart Love Stories, but a blonde with a smile like this just might leave you dumbfounded.

Best remembered for his iconic paintings for crime magazines like Real Detective and Master Detective, Redmond spent much of his career as a cover artist in the romance pulps.

Smart Love Stories was a resurrection of a traditional Street & Smith pulp, Ainslee's, but as a romance, as the firm hoped to pile on the success of Love Story Magazine during the lovesick 1930s. The old-fashioned title soon morphed to Ainslee's Smart Love Stories and finally to simply Smart Love Stories. Judging from the scant number of extant copies, the title must not have sold very well. This is the first issue I'll get a chance to read. Cover artists included a number of the interior illustrators for Love Story Magazine but would later include John Drew, Zoe Mozert, George Quaintance, and Alex Redmond.

This pulp was contributed by Dickymoe, with scans and edits from yours truly.
