Top-Notch v03 n01 (1911-01.Street & Smith) cover (Darwin Edit)

Artist unknown, 1911.

An early issue of Street & Smith's Top-Notch, a magazine of juvenile fiction in the tradition of Jack Harkaway world-beating schoolboys everywhere. Ostensibly edited by S&S house name Burt Standish, purported author of thousands of Frank Merriwell stories, but actually edited by Hank Thomas, Top-Notch also employed Gilbert Patten, the actual writer of decades worth of Frank Merriwell stories in Tip-Top Weekly. Patten estimated that he had published some 40 million words as an author. With 500 million books in print from library re-printings of the weekly serials, Patten is one of the best-selling authors of all time, though he would collect no royalties and mostly add to the fame of Street & Smith's house monikers.
