Football Stories v01n01 cover George Gross (MCS Darwin Edit)
George Gross, 1937.
The first issue of Football Stories, the first pulp devoted entirely to pigskin fiction and the title with the most issues. Football stories ran on an annual or semi-annual basis until 1953 totaling 25 editions. Other football pulps include All-American Football Magazine (24 issues), Football Action (23 issues), Thrilling Football (14 issues), Popular Football (12 issues), Exciting Football (11 issues), Best Football Novels (1 issue), and All Football Stories (1 issue).
Football, then, would fall just behind boxing for most issues of a single sport pulp, beaten down by the trio of Fight Stories (my favorite sports pulp), Knockout Magazine, and Jack Dempsey's Fight Magazine.
Far behind but close in number are baseball and rodeo (represented only by Rodeo Romances), and bringing up the rear is basketball with only 2 devoted issues, a single issue of Basketball Stories from Fiction House and a single issue of All Baseball Stories from Martin Goodman's Red Circle line.
Dwarfing all of these single sport pulps combined was the champion of the sports pulps, Street & Smith's Sport Story which ran approximately 425 issues. There were number of variety sport pulps like Sport Story, too, because, truth be told, reading an entire issue of stories on a single sport can be a bit much, though there's far more variety in the stories than you might imagine.
Here's the issue! This is an older Wolfhound scan, and I've only supplied a cover restoration to replace the thumbnail in the old scan, as the issue happened to come up for auction last night giving me the opportunity to lay hands on a better image.
