New York Evening Graphic 1927-05-20 Lindbergh Hops Off

Front page of the New York Evening Graphic, May 20 1927.

Lindbergh departs.

An incredibly important tabloid of the day, Bernarr Macfadden's New York Evening Graphic delivered news, gossip, comic strips, sports and other entertainment to the masses. Walter Winchell, Ed Sullivan, and many others would get their start in the paper.

Reaching a peak circulation of one million, some of the record of the paper is lost to time. Librarians at the time hardly considered the paper worth housing in public libraries or worthy of microfilm. The microfilm records that do exist are scattered and incomplete. There are stretches of the paper for which we have no record. Not to mention, microfilm sucks. This issue is printed on no less than three different types of paper stock, each with their own distinct color. I've managed to track down a few issues over the years. They are amazingly ghostly and often incomplete when found. I talk about preserving pulp, but newsprint is crumbling even faster, and this is an example of where snobbery has cost us the loss of important cultural history in that libraries as arbiters of what is worthy of preservation thumb their nose at low (but in incredibly popular and influential) materials.
