This used to be an ant. Its exoskeleton was infiltrated by a fungus --- Ophiocordyceps unilateralis I suspect.

 

This fungus infects the host ant and slowly takes control of its body while alive with reproducing spores as its main objective.

 

Eventually the ant is over run with the fungus and dies.

 

The tiny world at or feet can be brutal at times.
