Re 430 114 / Oberrüti (CH)

Description 📄:

On a sunny spring day, a freight train consisting of tank wagons winds its way through the hills of central Switzerland. They are pulled by a locomotive that is now quite rare to photograph. It is the Re 4/4 III, now designated Re 430 according to UIC standards. The third series of the Re 4/4 was produced at the same time as the second series, but in significantly smaller numbers. This was because their purpose was clearly defined: to transport heavy freight and passenger trains on Switzerland's steepest routes. This required a locomotive that was more powerful than a Re 4/4 II. SOB, which needed to transport heavy trains to Einsideln on a gradient of up to 50‰, found a solution by modifying one of their Re 4/4 II locomotives. By reducing the number of teeth on the pinion in the transmission gearbox, they were able to gain a great deal of power, but had to lower the maximum speed from 140 to 125 km/h. The SBB tested the SOB locomotive and, to their great surprise, ordered around twenty of them, along with a few individual orders from private companies. It is essentially the same locomotive as the Re 4/4 II, but with a different transmission ratio, which gives the locomotive more power. To date, the only company still operating them is Widmer Rail Services (WRS), which offers freight transport services by train with its four Re 430 locomotives. The 430 number 114 was completely advertised by Synopsis in 2018 and is also the only Re 430 still to have its original round headlights.
