Edward and the Egg
Built for Heroes of Fur and Feather on TBB, as well as the Island Bound category of Summer Joust 2025.
Edward approached the Questing Beast, talons shaking and worried what he'd have to do. He closed his eyes and took a deep breath. He hoped his quest would be simple- He was just a mere gatherer, and all he'd ever used this spear for was fruits, not dreadful enemies. He opened his eyes and took the last step forward, dropping a tithe of his mother's special dried apples before Tamouk.
Tamouk nodded and stepped aside, revealing a golden wheel. "Spin the wheel to choose your quest" he said. "spin the wheel...spin the wheel" his acolytes echoed.
Edward nodded, grasping the edge of the wheel and spinning it with all his might. He watched as it circled round and round, finally coming to stop at a simple egg.
"Fitting," noted the questing beast, "an egg for a bird. Edward, you will head east for 3 days. There you will reach the edge of the continent. A short ways offshore there sit several islands, each with a large tree. In the biggest of these is where the Grawkin nests. You must retrieve one of it's eggs and return here."
Edward nodded and bowed his thanks before taking to the sky, heading east.
Three days later he arrived, quickly locating the tree and seeing the egg simply sitting in the hollow of a tree. "Wow," he thought, "what luck! this is going to be easy!" That was when he saw the eyes, yellow rimmed with red, peering out of the tree.
Edward quickly dropped to the ground in fear. Now that he thought about it, he realized he had no idea what a Grawkin even was. He peeked out and saw the Grawkin climb out of the hollow. It was a large bird, with teeth protruding from its beak and bright red plumage. He trembled.
Then the Grawkin began to speak. "I know you're there little birdie" it said, "come out, come out..." Edwards wings shook and he cowered down even further, holding the spear in front of him in shaking talons.
The Grawkin came closer and closer, soon standing right in front of Edward. "It's alright," it said kindly "I'm not going to hurt you. Ny name's Gndjsbgg, what's yours?"
A few hours later, after discussing many things with strange creature, much of it using words Edward had never heard of, he finally managed to leave with an egg in his possession, which he won in a daring battle of the wits in which he defeated the Grawkin with his acute powers of language (actually he just spoke a bunch or random nonsense since it seems like that was half of what came out of the Grawkin's mouth and somehow this caused him to win the so-called battle).
