Pour water on the wine

The strength and weakness of compromise. Maybe a typical Dutch idiom: when a group of people has to make a decision, not everyone can stick to their personal point of view. Each must concede something toward the other. In Dutch we say "water bij de wijn doen", literally translated "pour water on the wine'.
