White-Throated Kingfisher / Halcyon smyrnensis / 白胸翡翠

NOTE: Starting in a few day’s time, I’ll be traveling and as such will be ON / OFF until 1st August; have a great summer !

A White-Throated Kingfisher (aka White-Breasted Kingfisher) dives into the river and spectacularly spears a fish with its beak.

With a diet that includes virtually any vertebrate or critter it is able to catch and swallow whole, this species of tree kingfisher can frequently be found living far away from open bodies of water.

This particular individual, however, is resident along a river that meanders through the wetlands in Northern HK, meaning its diet probably consists mostly of fish and mangrove crabs.
