"Very" Painted HIlls

A cold and clear winter afternoon as the sun lowered to the west and set these ancient hills ablaze with light and color.

I am asked when to capture the hills in their brightest colors. My best success has occurred in late afternoon winter light an hour or so before golden-hour. Earlier in the day often disappoints hopeful visitors, arriving to find the hills in muted even dull grayish hues. Also, a sky studded with brilliant white cumulus clouds makes for satisfying even spectacular images.

I am grateful for your visit and comments. Thanks much!
