The Milwaukee Road Warrior
Illinois Central's Green Diamond: St. Louis (2 of 2)
Two great pics of the Green Diamond, the IC's Chicago to St. Louis passenger streamliner. The Green Diamond made the trip in just under five hours.
The first photo shows it in Milwaukee prior to its inaugural run. The date is April 24, 1936. Milwaukee's Everett Street Station was not on the route of the train; this was just a publicity tour to generate interest around the midwest. This was, after all, the period of the CB&Q, CNW, and Milwaukee Road speed liners.
My favorite thing about this photo is the huge Milwaukee Road sign on the trainshed that faced north towards downtown.
The second photo (above) is undated but is a Lucius Beebe/Charles Clegg frame from St. Louis Union Station, presumably after service had started.
