Torre del Mangia. Piazza del Campo, Siena, Tuscany.
The Torre del Mangia.
In nearby Maremma, 50 years ago, the elderly described the Moon of Mangia, which in Siena was suspended in the sky, without any support.
Even then, I was less than 10 years old, it seemed impossible to me, but the description was reiterated as true.
About 30 years later, going to Siena one afternoon, from the top of a hill I saw the view of the distant city over which, in the low light of the sun nearing sunset, the white top of the tower stood out, while the body below, in red bricks , it was confused with the roof tiles, of the same color and material.
It looked just like a moon suspended in the blue sky!
