Old Tonnage
BRORIVER of 1951 (IMO 5218640)
A photo of the 1951 Eriksbergs Mekaniska Verkstads AB of Gothenburg built general cargo ship BRORIVER (ex MALTESHOLM) of Rederiet for m/s Broriver, seen under tow by the tugs WOONA (IMO 5392800) and WARRA (IMO 7030444) passing Goat Island inbound to Darling Harbour, Sydney, Australia in charter of SOFRANA in a shot presumably taken in April of 1972.
Built as MALTESHOLM for A/B Svenska Atlant Linien, she was sold out of the SAL fleet to Rederiet for m/s Broriver and renamed BRORIVER for trade to Singapore and Malaysia in 1969. Sold to Lito Shipping Co, SA (E. Karydis) and renamed LITO in 1975, she sprung a leak in her engine room in the Mediterranean Sea one nautical mile north east of Gamasa, Daqahliya Governorate, Egypt on July 1st, 1981, whilst carrying bagged flour on a voyage from Kalamata, Peloponnese, Greece to Vietnam. All crew abandoned ship and were rescued, and no trace of the ship was found afterwards, she presumably sank and was later declared a total loss. Wreck Coordinates: 31.46N 31.58E
April 1972 slide, purchased from eBay seller "ZANY JANES" in 2024.
Special thanks to shipspotting.com user Manfred for helping identify the classic ships in the image and cisco for further info. Further edits by AL.
