Old Tonnage
MAGNOLIA MARINER of 1953 (IMO 5283841)
A photo of the 1953 Ingalls Shipbuilding of Pascagoula, United States built C4 class C4-S-1a type general cargo ship MAGNOLIA MARINER of American President Lines, seen moored in San Francisco in a shot presumably taken in May of 1958.
Built for the U.S. Maritime Administration and operated by the Mississippi Shipping Company Inc., she was laid up in the Mobile Reserve Fleet, Mobile, Alabama in 1954 and sold to American President Lines in 1957. She was renamed PRESIDENT GARFIELD in 1959 and her superstructure was rebuilt by 1967. She was sold out of the APL fleet to Waterman Steamship Corp and renamed SAMUEL CHASE in 1974. On June 16th, 1980, she arrived at Kaohsiung, Taiwan to be scrapped by Chien Yu Steel Industrial Co.
A list of all C4 class ships made by me can be found in the link. The ships are organized roughly by delivery date: docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1w_8AzUBW3rIJ-tNFsOZFxXSqb...
May 1958 photo, purchased from eBay seller "beezersbooks" in 2024.
I do not claim to be the original photographer of this photographic work in any form, way, or shape. Scanned and posted for purposes of reviewing maritime history under the guidance of "fair dealing" laws in the United Kingdom and "fair use" laws in the United States.
