Cultural Heritage Unlocked
Former Hospital 醫院舊址, No.218 West Damochang Street 西打磨廠街218號, Dongcheng District 東城區, Beijing 北京, China, Republic of China 民國 (1912-1949)
This unique-looking Courtyard House 四合院 was once a hospital in the busy commercial blocks outside Beijing’s Gate of Righteous Yang 正陽門. The general layout of the complex includes 2 consecutive courtyards on the central axis, the wooden houses inside were decorated with rare colourful glass windows and traditional Chinese wood-carving doors. Moreover, the hospital’s street façade was specially designed with a layer of wooden ‘curtain wall’, imitating Western architectural styles with pilasters, wood-carving Ionic orders as well as large windows. This made the house extra distinctive in the old street.
This historical architectural complex has been listed as protected Courtyard House, and fully renovated in 2015 by MAD Architects. However the portico at the main entrance has been sealed off by glass doors. It is a private residence today. This photo was taken in 2009.
