Black-capped Chickadee (Poecile atricapillus)
Chickadees weigh less than 1/2 of an ounce (<14g) and harsh winters can be life threatening to these tiny songbirds. They would need our help during cold winter days. Research has shown that when the temperature falls below 10 degrees Fahrenheit (-12 C), the survival rate of chickadees almost doubled when they had access to feeders! Feeding these songbirds during the coldest months increased their overall winter survival rate to 69% versus a 37% survival rate of those not having access to feeders.
Also, an experimental study from 2024 found that watching birds improves well-being and reduces stress. It also connects us to nature and promotes much needed conservation :)
