American Three-toed Woodpecker (Picoides dorsalis) - male
I am so happy to have been able to catch a glimpse of this bird here, the American Three-toed Woodpecker, during my recent trip to Northern Minnesota. They are not particularly shy, but their restlessness and sudden flights make it hard to approach them. Generally, they also forage on the topmost branches of the tallest trees!
The American Three-toed Woodpecker is the most northerly distributed woodpecker in North America. Given their dependence on older forests and diet specialization, they are rather scarce in many parts of their range. They forage and eat bark beetles and wood-boring beetles, so they help maintain the health of forests!
Unlike other woodpeckers who have four toes, these woodpeckers only have three toes on each foot. Two facing forward and one towards back.
It makes me sad to see so much logging and deforestation around the world as it directly causes loss of biodiversity and loss of many wonderful species like the three-toed woodpecker.
