A closeup of the "Portage Red" variety of the Jacobsville Sandstone (below), and the iron-spotted, Flemish Bond brick.
Here most of the Jacobsville ashlar is set in rock-faced, random-coursed fashion.
The iron-spotting on the brick, particularly visible when magnified, is produced by firing at a higher-than-normal temperature. This causes the iron present in the clay to migrate to the surface in a molten state and then ultimately congeal there.
