The Brownstone Chronicles, Part 39: Iron-rich Rock Meets Iron-rich Brick | Charles Gates Dawes House (1894), Evanston, Illinois, USA

(Updated on May 14, 2024)

Looking at a portion of the western elevation.

A closeup of the "Portage Red" variety of the Jacobsville Sandstone (below), and the iron-spotted, Flemish Bond brick.

Here most of the Jacobsville ashlar is set in rock-faced, random-coursed fashion.

The iron-spotting on the brick, particularly visible when magnified, is produced by firing at a higher-than-normal temperature. This causes the iron present in the clay to migrate to the surface in a molten state and then ultimately congeal there.
