VII. Collapse of a Court, Ruin of a Home
"Reverse!" Earley blared into the intercom.
Before Clarence could fire another round, the Pershing jolted backwards. Just as they started rolling backwards from their stationary position, a green lance exploded nto the dirt where they had just been. Clarence traversed the turret, smoking out gun positions. While he called for more white phosphorus rounds, Earley radioed for any tanks left standing to fire white phosphorus shells towards the gun positions.
A-Company layed low as American shells streaked above them. Buck looked up as the shelling stopped. The phosphorus clouds were shrinking. A runner zig-zagged to each platoon, the time for the assault had come. Lieutenant Boom shouted the command to charge. Doughs sprang up and bolted to the trench line. Buck reached the trench lines, throwing a grenade in the process. Twenty yards down the line, lay a gun pit filled with stunned Germans. The rest of A-Company joined the lone scout, disarming the frightened Germans.
A-Company had taken 173 prisoners, most of them were older men from the 12th Volksgrenadier Division. Buck was exhausted, but hustled with the rest of Squad 3/2 into the rest of Blatzheim, were cracks of gunfire could be heard.
The Pershings wheels rose and fell as it crossed over the trench line. Eagle 7 parked with 6 other Shermans on the edge of Blatzheim. Clarence stepped outside, stunned at the sight he saw on the Cologne plains. The four Shermans and lone Stuart sat like derelict ghosts. Other Shermans limped back to Golzhiem for repairs. Audiffred and Chuck had made it back to the village, both being treated for their wounds. Easy Company tankers came over to the Pershing, teasing them for being "too slow".
"I never saw any of you try to pass us," Clarence snarled. The other tankers left quietly.
Earley looked at his friend.
"From now on you fire when you want to, no more waiting on me," Earley said.
Clarence promised he wouldn't let him down. Now the ultimate goal was near. The "Fortress City" or "Queen City", was in the cross airs of the 3rd Armored Division. Cologne would be taken at all costs.
