Hoch über dem Umland von Barcelona liegt das beeindruckende Benediktinerkloster Montserrat mit der schwarzen Madonna und stellt eine der wichtigsten Sehenswürdigkeiten im Umland der katalanischen Metropole dar. Allein die Anfahrt über kurvenreiche Straßen zum bekannten Wallfahrtsort ist ein besonderes Erlebnis und wird nur von dem Panoramablick vom Kloster selbst in den Schatten gestellt. Das Wort "Montserrat" stammt aus dem Lateinischen und Katalanischen und bedeutet "Gezackter Berg" Dieser Name beschreibt das zerklüftete, sägezahnartige Aussehen des Berges, das durch seine einzigartigen nadelförmigen Spitzen und Felsformationen gekennzeichnet ist. Diese Formationen wurden im Laufe von Millionen von Jahren durch natürliche Erosionsprozesse geformt und haben eine dramatische und unverwechselbare Landschaft geschaffen. Heutzutage kommt man einfach und bequem mit der "Cremallera de Montserrat" (der Zahnradbahn) von der Talstaton Monistrol de Montserrat auf den "gezackten Berg".
