Architectural contrasts, Rijeka

As ever with Rijeka, this is a scene of mixed, complex, histories. The house in front was built by the English engineer and entrepreneur, Robert Whitehead, who along with a retired Italian officer from the Habsburg army, Ivan Luppis, invented the torpedo. On the right is the Italian secondary school. On the left, a branch of the Croatia tax office (amongst other things) in what looks like a late-Yugoslav style building. I would guess that this was built because whatever building was there was destroyed in World War II, when Rijeka was extensively bombed.
