The images of peasant life, landscape and harvest scenes painted by Gauguin at Le Pouldu are some of the most radically simplified of his career. This picturesque scene of a country farmyard shows a woman at well, framed and almost subsumed by the buildings. Gauguin's varied brushstrokes evoke the rough stone, thatched roofs and surrounding vegetation. While the work has elements of a traditional landscape-the bands of sky, massed buildings and grassy foreground-the flattening of the scene and the rich patterns emphasise its decorative effects.
