Dandenong Ranges from 'Beleura' 1870

Naarm/Melbourne

oil on canvas

From the James Fairfax collection, gift of Bridgestar Pty Ltd 1995 1995.353

The wealthy pastoralist James Butchart of 'Beleura'

commissioned this painting from Eugene von Guérard,

who on February 1870 visited his property on Boon

Wurrung/Bunurong Country, Mornington Peninsula,

Victoria. The painting presents a sweeping coastal

vista looking back towards Naarm/Melbourne, which is

depicted as a land in development. In the middle distance

are the Dandenong Ranges with Mount Eliza in the

foreground. The protruding section of land is Pelican Point.
