Hittite-style Shield Mould
The Hittite Empire, based in Anatolia (modern-day Turkey), became Egypt's rival for control of the northern Syrian coast around the time of Tutankhamun. By the 19th Dynasty, Egypt considered Hittite expansion a growing threat to its security.
Egyptian workmen used this limestone mould in the manufacture of protective shields. Based on Hittite designs, the iron shields were reinforced with bronze strips, shaped and fastened to the shield edges.
